1982 John Marples Cabin Sib Trimaran

5 October, 2011 by EVAN

About this Sailboat:

Blitzen is a 1982 John Marples’ Cabin Sib 30′ trimaran. She is fast, fun, wonderful for island access, and makes an excellent day sailer. With a kickup rudder and pivoting centerboard, she has a shallow draft of only 2’1″ (2’6″ loaded). Blitzen was professionally built with WEST® epoxy and diagonal cedar. The cabin is functional, cozy and dry. However, this in not a cruising trimaran as there is no standing head room or shower below. Yet Blitzen is well equipped for her size of boat and she has been seaworthy for me. I’ve taken her southbound around Hatteras, to the Keys, the Dry Tortugas, and also to the Yucatan. Blitzen would be a great boat for racing. I don’t race, but had Blitzen at 17.6 knots for a short while during the Mexico trip.

The galley has an ice box, two burner stove, and a foot pump for fresh water to the sink. The head can be accessed from deck via a hatch or from the cabin. A “play pen” v-berth sleeps two adults and a settee sleeps one adult or two children. There are two cabin vents. There’s no standing head room except when the companionway is open or at the head hatch. A sun shower is used on deck and a telescoping stainless steel ladder is handy for taking a swim.

Equipment on Board:

Blitzen was rigged for the boomless main when I bought her and I simply love it. The previous owner described the boomless sail as a “7 batten main with cars, Randy Smyth, 39′ luff x 11.5′ @ 15º angle, 2 reef points, cruising Dacron.” The genoa is a “150% genoa, Dave Beirig, with Erin Green sunbrella strip fits NC 32 roller, sail #22.” The spinnaker is a “.75 tri radial spinnaker, 16.5′, 25 1/2′ luff, green/white.”
